troubles compiling Octave ver. 2.1.50 (readline??)

Hello,

I run into troubles when compiling Octave ver. 2.1.50 on my machine. I have P4 
with Mandrake Linux 9.0. I get stuck at the configure phase:

I pasted bellow the portion of the messages that were displayed:

configure: WARNING: I couldn't find -ltermcap, -lterminfo, -lncurses, 
-lcurses, or -ltermlib!
checking for rl_set_keyboard_input_timeout in -lreadline... no
configure: WARNING: I need GNU Readline 4.2 or later
configure: error: this is fatal unless you specify --disable-readline
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------


Any hints what may be wrong here? I am sure I have readline 4.3-4 on my 
machine.
