Yes, but installing a package from testing means upgrading the whole
system to testing (especially libc6). I cannot do that since my server is
also used as a file server in my company.

After a little more investigation I found a working gcc-3.0 on the system
but I don't know why Octave's configure did not chose it to build? I'll try
to force the use of this version...
