Skipping comments in load files

I'm working with octave-2.1.55 on Mac OS X 10.3.5.

So far, I have always stripped the ascii headers from my experimental data
files, which is a nuisance, and can lead to confusion later. I noticed that
gnuplot will all ignore input data lines that start with #. I tried this in
octave with both # and % without success.

Is there a way to mark and ignore comment lines in an ascii file that will
be read by the octave "load" command?

Thanks.

Joe
