You're on the leading (bleeding?) edge of octave compilation. I'm running OS
X 10.3.9, and I'm hesitating to upgrade to 10.4 (Tiger) until I'm sure all
the software that I need is available and works. Make sure that you have all
the Apple developer tools (Xcode tools) installed including gcc. They're on
the distribution DVD, but are not automatically installed with the system.

My suggestion would be to try octave-2.1.70 and the November 16, 2004
octave-forge. See

  http://wiki.octave.org/wiki.pl?OctaveForMac

for some ideas of things to try. Build octave first, then octave-forge. I
would stay away from octave-2.9.x until a few more kinks are worked out.

You'll need a Fortran compiler. See

  http://hpc.sourceforge.net/

for g77-3.4.2. Let me know if it works properly with OS X 10.4. If all else
fails, you can see if the octave-2.1.69 with octave-forge binary from the
HPC website will install properly on your Mac.

Please report. We're all going to be facing the same issues soon.

Joe
