   I was totally wrong.  I misinterpreted the unwind error
   messages as continuing code (because of the accidental
   match in line number inside the function to the line number
   of my prompt!

Something occurred to me... John is often including his standard 
paragraph about making a formal Octave bug report, when asking
for help on this list; I think it is a wise advice---definitely
not just pedantry. In my own experience, I have solved many
problems while just writing down exactly what was happening.

Not only you are more likely to catch simple snafus like the one
above, but sometimes you might end up seeing the solution to a real,
complicated problems.
