For SuSE 10.0 DVD and Octave 2.1.71 I had to install the fortran (and maybe the 
f2c) rpm(s) at
http://ftp.opensuse.org/pub/opensuse/distribution/SL-10.0-OSS/inst-source/suse/i586/
(I am not sure if they were on the DVD)
