quitting Octave: permission denied

Dear all,

I'm on a Mac (an oldish Quicksilver Dual-G4 with Mac OS X 10.4.8). I  
have both Octave 2.1.72 from Fink and Octave 2.9.9 compiled from  
sources (following Thomas Treichls instructions). When I quit Octave,  
I get an error 'permission denied':

octave:1> quit
error: Permission denied

This happens with both versions of Octave.

Any ideas what might be wrong? The same problem does not occur on  
another Mac with the same OS and Octave versions.
