plot label fonts

Somewhere in the transition to 3.0, the label commands (e.g. xlabel) 
produce labels with a different font than the tic mark labels.  These 
label fonts do not respect the `-F:SIZE' option when print to an eps 
file.  What can I do to have control over the font type and size of the 
labels?
