Were any non-free programs actually freed as a result of that policy
change?  If so, that was a positive effect.

There are two aspects of the change; rejecting the GPL, and rejecting
non-free licenses.  The former was negative and the latter positive.
Although both changes were made together, they are not intrinsically
related.

    you're ticked off that your favorite flavor of freedom wasn't
    selected.

Octave is a part of the GNU Project.  We developed it for the sake of
users' freedom.  We release it under the GPL to protect their freedom.

Saying that defending users' freedom is just a "flavor" shows you
disagree with the goals of this project.  You are entitled to your
views, but using this list to attack the goals of Octave is
disruptive.  Please take it elsewhere.
