I would have sworn there was a way to do this from within octave, but I can't find it now.

Personally, I prefer the looks of the plots made with Aquaterm. It's true that labels and titles can plot outside the window (I think this is fixed with the development version of gnuplot or when using fltk with the development version of Octave. However, usually this is important only when you want to share your plots with others. In those cases it is convenient to "export" he plot by saving it to a pdf with:print <name>.pdfwhere <name> is your desired plot file name. The titles, et. al. will show up in the pdf when you open it in, say, Preview. You can then copy just the plot itself to the clipboard and paste it into a memo document or whatever.Liam G.
