Do try to avoid sending HTML emails next time... or maybe I'm becoming
a caustic old fogie for not liking reading fonts and colours and
formatting that others thought looked good on their screen but don't
look good on mine.

The error message says all, really. When Octave was compiled or
distributed on your system, it wasn't compiled with the HDF5 library.
If there is someone available that can recompile Octave for you with
support for the HDF5 library, ask that person for help. Otherwise, you
will have to compile it yourself, which can be a delicate affair
depending what operating system you're using.

Feel free asking for help how to compile Octave if you decide to do it
yourself and these instructions aren't clear to you:
