I agree with difficulty involving 'gzip'. In octave 3.3.90:
octave.exe:2> pkg install octcdf-1.1.1.tar.gz
unable to start subprocess for `"gzip -d -c "c:\Users\s-dickson\Downloads\octcdf-1.1.1.tar.gz" | tar xf - 2>&1"' error: called from `unpack' in file C:\Octave\3.3.90\share\octave\3.3.90\m\miscellaneous\unpack.m near line 175, column 23
error: called from:
error: C:\Octave\3.3.90\share\octave\3.3.90\m\pkg\pkg.m at line 729, column 5 error: C:\Octave\3.3.90\share\octave\3.3.90\m\pkg\pkg.m at line 354, column 9
octave.exe:2>
Thanks,

Finally (for today), I think that a lot of the subsidiary programs like gzip are
either not findable or missing.
Compression to gz is to be done zlib dynamic library but not external program.
Because internet connection in my home is quite slow so that I hurried to make
a package.

I would like to check the external dependencies again.

Feedback is very important for the preparation of ver.3.4.
Thanks for your reporting.
