OK, sorry, I see by myself now that this is stupid, it's actually
if (something_that_evaluates_to_true ())
aptr [i + a.dim1 () * (j + a.dim2 () * k)] = z;
and the overhead depends on how much it takes to evaluate
something_that_evaluates_to_true ()
