Sorry, I should have said more precisely .  It quits and says that it exited without a solution, and suggests reducing the InitialStep and MaxStep parameter.

Thanks for your suggestion.  I can try rewriting it in s rather than ps, but I still would like to understand why this does not work.  Does Octave not keep numbers in the same format as Matlab?

You could possibly try another solver from odepkg, e.g. ode2r (off the top of my head)
