Good to know -- but "make install" isn't a big deal. The annoying part
is re-installing all the -forge packages (though I have to say the
-forge pkg option is really convenient).

Interesting; doesn't liboctave preserve ABI compatibility within a
major release cycle? If so, then what else could break an installed
package?
