Indeed, I'm using Ubuntu 10.10 and Octave 3.2. I'm going to try with a newer
version by using unofficial binaries. I'll tell you after trying if I manage
to do something.

This is one of the frames I got by recording with the Kinect and that I am
not able to read with imread function:
