This is an interesting outcome.
When I tried to convince people to install Debian in a chroot or virtual
machine for an easy instalation of Octave while continuing to run Ubuntu
as their main system, I never heard back.
When I actually try to help someone getting Octave to run under Ubuntu,
he switches to Debian.

Anyways, good luck. Bug reports for the packaged version are welcome,
preferably via 'reportbug'.
