Here is a function that reads in your data:

fid=fopen('data','r')

  l=fgetl(fid);

    return

  end

    printf('%s\n',l)

  end

end

fclose(fid)

end

Hopefully that will be enough to get you started. I am not aware of a beginners book on octave, but if you have used other languages octave should be no problem.
