Last time this was discussed, I suggested the following solution:

  @macro vitem{name}
  @item @address@hidden@var{min},address@hidden@}
  @end macro

and then use @vitem instead of @item whenever you need something
special inside the @item.  What are the problems with using this
alternative approach?
