Hi folks,

I want to pick up an issue I let slide, and that is moving the old 0.2
releases out of the users way. A new incident of a confused user reminded
me that this is still pending. The below mail is my draft to be sent to
address@hidden (or elsewhere?). If you have a good idea where to move
gnu-0.2 to, please share it. For your convenience, I am including the old
and new README below (nothing is attached).

=========================================================================
Hi,

I think that the last Hurd release 0.2 in 1997 in ftp.gnu.org is better
moved out of the way, because we are slow in getting a new release out of
the door, and nobody should download the old packages.

The following files should be moved from gnu/hurd into a subdirectory
gnu/hurd/old:
-rw-r--r-- 1 ftpadm gnumod 74976 Sep 7 1996 hurd-0.0-0.1.diff.gz
-rw-r--r-- 1 ftpadm gnumod 1169594 Aug 6 1996 hurd-0.0.tar.gz
-rw-r--r-- 1 ftpadm gnumod 1199731 Sep 7 1996 hurd-0.1.tar.gz
-rw-r--r-- 1 ftpadm gnumod 1375606 Jun 12 1997 hurd-0.2.tar.gz

A new README text is attached and should be installed as gnu/hurd/README.

The directory gnu/gnu-0.2 should be archived as well, and moved out of
users way.

Thanks,
Marcus

old readme:

The GNU Hurd has been under active development since the 0.2 release.
Please see http://www.gnu.org/software/hurd/ for more details.

The contrib/ directory contains files provided by volunteers
contributing to Hurd development, that are not part of any release.
See the contrib/README file.

proposed new readme:

The GNU Hurd has been under active development since the 0.2 release.
Until the next release, the current sources are only available
directly from the CVS repository.

Please see http://www.gnu.org/software/hurd/download.html#cvs
for more details about obtaining the current Hurd source code.

If you are interested in running the Hurd rather than developing it,
you are better off installing a binary distribution of the GNU/Hurd
system. Please see http://www.gnu.org/software/hurd/install.html for
more details about installing the GNU/Hurd system.

See http://www.gnu.org/software/hurd/ for more details about the Hurd.

The contrib/ directory contains files provided by volunteers
contributing to Hurd development, that are not part of any release.
See the contrib/README file.

The old/ directory contains the previous releases. They are archived
for historical reasons, but should not be used by users or developers.
