If you're still having problems with dotest_internal_debug, you might try 
contrib/debug_check_log.sh.  I wrote that because I was having some
problems with dotest_line_by_line some time ago myself and writing this script 
seemed the easiest solution at the time.  It's designed to simply
be run from the directory containing check.log and will output the line-by-line 
differences between the expression and the results.
