After several iterations this finally worked thanks to help from
Larry, et.al.
I would respond to the last articles in this thread but Google seems
to have lost all but the first two (I never seemed to have this
trouble deja.com).
When we last left our hero, he was getting "missing .cvspass" errors.
Two respondents pointed out that I needed to "touch ~/.cvspass" (BTW,
why can't cvs create this file itself?). After that everything worked
fine except the things that I did not know as a novice user. This was
a spare time project for me, so after about 5 hours in 5 days, I had
convinced myself that everything was working properly.
There was also a question of my technique, logging into a pserver from
root. Yeah, yeah, under normal conditions, on a production machine, I
would never do that. However, this box is basically my toy Linux box
with no trusted position in the network, used only completely behind
the firewall. I was in a three command cycle:
vi /etc/inetd.conf
killall -HUP inetd
cvs login (or telnet whatever 2401)
The first two commands I had to run as root, and I didn't see the
point in breaking the cycle just to run the third command as a regular
user. Note that I did not log in as root on the server side; I was
only running as root on the client side.
In any case, THANK YOU all, especially Larry, for all the help. I am
now slightly less clueless than before :^).
