Todd, your tip about the python version of the script came good. Thanks.
Full responses are below but it's a bit academic now.

Now that I've got a changelog I'll take another look at whether we still
need the $Log$ keyword in our output.

No. It seems to get the output of the cvs log command, echoes all the
directories in CVS to the output window:

cvs server: Logging system/webserver
cvs server: Logging system/webserver/Widgets

then hangs after the last one as before.

This is perl, v5.8.4 built for MSWin32-x86-multi-thread

Running the log command in Wincvs gives the same summary output as the
cvsc2l script, then indicates

***** CVS exited normally with code 0 *****

i.e. cvs terminated with code 0, i.e. success.

Thanks, that was a good tip. In fact, it comes with WinCVS, and that's the
package I use under Windows. I updated to the latest WinCVS and found the
option to create a changelog on the Macros | CVS menu. I already have
Python installed (that's the language we use) so no problems running it.
And it produces what I need, or could be customised for our needs.

:-) No. We've embraced open source cross platform tools but personally
I've not gone as far as installing *nix...
