Are they files really big ? What files were you checking in ? Are
the admin files in CVSROOT/ dir located on a slower file system ....

The other possibility that comes to my mind is, the modules files
may be stored in an ndbm DB like Berkeley DB or GNU dbm and
the DBM itself may not be configured in an optimal fashion.
