The chmod story has NOTHING to do with CVS.  It has EVERYTHING to do with
SSH.
You'd have had the same issue no matter what application you were trying to
use over SSH if you had 777 on the .ssh directory.  If you develop a habit
of
looking in your system log, you might save the hours next time.  SSH tells
you (in the log) when it won't do something because the directory
permissions
are wrong.  It is not hard to accept.  Nobody except you should be able to
do
squat in .ssh or system security is completely out the window.  SSH knows
that
and refuses to operate in order to protect you from yourself.
