What do you mean by "while in CVS" ?

More like

    cvs checkout <name-of-your-project>
    cd <name-of-your-project>
    vi <filename>

and when you're done,

    cvs commit

Again there is no such thing as "while in CVS".  Once you check out
a sandbox, you have a private copy of the files and you can do
anything you want to them.  When your private copy is in a state
you like, you can commit your changes.
