"No space left on device"?

What does this error from CVS mean?:

unable to write, file Makefile.in
No space left on device

I am using:

Client: Concurrent Versions System (CVS) 1.11.22 (client)
Server: Concurrent Versions System (CVS) 1.11.22 (client/server)

Client: Windows XP
Server: FreeBSD 5.0

I have never seen this error before, and the error message does not indicate 
if the problem is on the client or on the server.

The hard drive on my PC has over 56GB of available space, and the server has 
over 29GB of available space on the volume that contains the repository.  So 
why would I be getting this (strange) error?
