1. play with the option in a local repository, to get a feeling how it
   is working, and

2. backup the repository before doing it! Also, make sure noone can make
   commits until you have done it and tested it thoroughly!

I wholeheartedly agree. In most cases, it is not worth the effort to do
so, especially when thinking about the ways it can (severely!) go wrong.
