Sorry, my mistake:
it was because I had started gnus-unplugged.
On page 191 of the Manual it says that hitting 'J j' will make Gnus
become `plugged'. But when I hit `J j' Emacs beeps at me!
To make Gnus become plugged I have to quit Gnus, quit Emacs
and restart Emacs and Gnus, plugged this time.
Maybe I'm misunderstanding the meaning of `J j'?
Is it `capital J and then small j'?
My version of Gnus is the 5.9.0.
