Nope, no success with C-u 4 g, g is bound to (gnus-group-get-new-news &optional 
ARG)

doing C-u 4 g or 4 g prints in *Messages*

Checking new news...
nnimap: Checking mailboxes...done
Checking new news...done

And the news at level 3 is updated.
