conf problm? sending to newsgroup also invokes sending mail

Hello

This is strange. When using my university connection there is a clear
distinction between sending ordinary mail (via smtpmail) or sending
news to newsgroup. However I am now abroad reading the news, when I
post news, for reasons unknown to me also sending via mail is invoked.
That also happens for a local nnml group using 

gnus-summary-news-other-window


The lossage buffer looks like
Sending via mail...
Generating hashcash...done
Generating hashcash...
Wrote /home/oub/Mail/NNML-Archive/test/273
Sending news via NNML-Archive using nnml...

The line sending via mail should not be there. What is the reason for
this behaviour? The strange thing is this does not happen when I am
using my standard connection at the university!
