When you press ^ in the *Group* buffer, you should get a *Server*
buffer. If the imap server is shown as "denied", it means Gnus has
given up on it, and won't try to reconnect.
I have occasionally had problems (but not frequently, so it is hard to
comment on repeatability) when I move my laptop from home to work or
vice versa. An SSL imap connection is shown as "open" but Emacs hangs
when I press g. Multiple C-g's revive Emacs, and closing the server by
pressing C (perhaps followed by more C-g's?) in the *Server* buffer
lets Gnus know that it should reconnect. This is on "GNU Emacs
22.0.92.1 (i386-apple-darwin8.8.2, Carbon Version 1.6.0) of 2007-01-20
on potato.local", Gnus updated now and then from CVS.
