Yes, you have to invert the predicate.  Here's what I use:

(setq gnus-thread-sort-functions
      '(gnus-thread-sort-by-number
        (not gnus-thread-sort-by-most-recent-date)
        gnus-thread-sort-by-total-score))
--8<---------------cut here---------------end--------------->8---

With this setup I get this behavior:

  - Threads with higher score appear on top of the summary
  - Threads with equal score appear sorted by date, e.g.
    newer threads are below older ones
  - Inside threads newer articles come before older ones
