Hello!
A search on Google should take you to the gnus manual and several
handy examples of gnus and imap. Especially gmail & gnus.

I'd suggest keeping your email settings in .gnus
Once you have your .gnus set-up, fire-up gnus, hit ^ in the group
buffer and check whether the settings for your imap server don't
conflict. That issue bugged me for a while...
