Damn, yes - effectively,

gnus-signature-separator is a variable defined in `gnus-art.el'.
Its value is ("^-- $" "^-- *$")

when I first glanced at it, I saw both of them were prefixed with the
"-- " and didn't notice the * would let the space be omitted, and then
when I copied and pasted from the article buffer to double-check, Gnus
put the correct thing - a "-- " - in the past buffer!

But now when I do C-u g, I see a weird separator of "- -- ".

I don't know what's going on. I think I should completely give up trying
to help people with Gnus though! I do honestly try to check what I say
before I say it but my batting average in this group so far has been
deleteriously execrable, for which I apologize. At least I've learned
that copying and pasting the text from the normal view of the article
body may not actually accurately reflect the as-posted article body.
It may also help to explain confusion from Merciadri.
