The attached patch reduces the size of libtool-1.5a.tar.gz as created by 'make 
dist' from over 3 million bytes to under 2.26 million bytes... about a 25% 
saving.

More importantly it paves the way for a move to modern autoconf and automake, 
so you will need up to the minute CVS releases of both to bootstrap libtool 
correctly if you apply it locally.
