I've not read the patch (which nonetheless sounds really nice),
but suddenly realized there was something odd with this Automake
requirement.

Is this true?  AFAICT the libtool packaging uses 1.8, but Libtool
itself doesn't require 1.8.  People should still be able to use
it with any version of Automake (including none) shouldn't they?

Also, I'm wondering if there is any reason to require 1.8 in the
package itself.  I've just removed the top-level "AUTOMAKE_OPTIONS =
1.7a" to try a build with 1.7.7 and it worked fine.  Am I missing
something?

Sure, if you have 1.8 you get m4_includes in your aclocal.m4, but this
is an implementation detail.  One may want to use 1.8 for this reason,
but if I'm right it probably doesn't warrant a "requirement".
