Okay, I am applying a more general patch to try to fix this problem for all variables passed to `config.status'. Can you check that everything behaves for you please?

Thanks.  Applied this bit to HEAD.  I'm mulling the other part over still...

Verified.  As applied to HEAD, these patches work fine.
