installed on my machines, and I haven't seen these failures for a long time.

If you come up with a reliable recipe for forcing these errors, I'm really
keen to get to the bottom of the matter.

I think this is an ash problem. I've noticed that if I replace /usr/bin/ash.exe with a copy of bash, these problems **seem** to go away. Of course, everything runs slower, because ash IS lean-n-mean...but at least it runs _correctly_.

I haven't tried just configuring with SHELL=bash, tho, but I imagine it would also solve^W workaround the problem.
