Why not make things consistent and leave things as-is?

Things were inconsistent already, with a mad jumble of echo, $echo, func_echo and $show. --silent and --verbose don't really work well enough to be worth using right now either. :-(

I'm trying to sync up all three versions of func_mkdir_p (among others), and add an M4 pass to the creation of libtoolize and tests/defs so that all the common stuff can be maintained in a single file...
