To reply to myself, this actually worked when I fixed the test:
<http://www.pogma.com/misc/mdemo_ltdl_test.tgz>
untar and cd into the dir, then run
libtoolize --ltdl=src/ltdl ; autoreconf --force --install --verbose; 
./configure ; make

So, okay to apply these changes (to HEAD only for now)?
