Since there's a relatively simple test that ensures we know what's going on, I'd rather not take a shortcut. Vendors could have introduced `s' switches to `ar' with different meanings before it was (sort-of?) standardized.
Surely that would cause other problems for libtool as well as most other software packages out there. I suspect that any system released in the past 20 years probably works fine, otherwise you'd have seen more problems related to ar.
