I agree with most of this (ammended for cross-compile) except that it is wrong to assume that users watch configure output while it runs. Most people seem to use that time to get a cup of coffee (or another Canadian beer). There needs to be a way to output any warnings at the tail end of configure so that at least someone is more likely to see them. Without adequate notification to the user, the user is likely to try 'make' and then find that libtool does not work.
