I've tried my half dozen systems now, none of them do, not even the
Debian MinGW cross ld.

Thank you for investing the work in this.  If you're really motivated,
then it would still be nice to have such a test, but obviously it's not
a big help, so might as well skip that then.

Ralf (makes a note to create a decent cross setup for regular testing)
