Well, it will hit you time and again if you don't listen.
Usually shortly before a deadline.

Passing --host is necessary in general.

No, it meant: do what I wrote and then libtool will work reasonably well
with MSVC.

Yes.  It's helpful already for some things Autoconf assumes.
