Ok.
With osx you can have 32bit and 64bit application coexist AFAIK.
So does lighnting get installed for both architecture?
Also have you an idea what is the problem for x86-64 architecture under osx?
ABI is obscure notion for me :)

x86-64 definitely works under Linux. The ABI is different, so it is
possible that it has problems under Mac OS X.
