[Lilypond-auto] [LilyIssues-auto] [testlilyissues:issues] #5036 128 beam

From: Auto mailings of changes to Lily Issues
Subject: [Lilypond-auto] [LilyIssues-auto] [testlilyissues:issues] #5036 128 beaming output not producing output as expected (?)
Date: Sun, 23 Apr 2017 13:41:56 +0000

I've checked with Gould, and she only gives examples up to 4 beams. The problem is that her rule is that, in descending notes, the top beam hangs from the staff line and the next one straddles it (it's centred). Three beams go hang, straddle, sit. It's then impossible to follow this rule for 4 beams unless the spacing of the beam is widened. With 5 beams it's then completely impossible to follow this rule unless the beams are made unevenly spaced. See the attached diagram - note that with 5 beams, the 4th beam down is also really in the wrong place.

is this a bug or done on purpose? The following snippet produces beams
of which the lowest beam does not touch the staff line below.

{ g128[ g] }

The small-gaps-fill-with-ink theory should avoid this. IMHO the output
would look better like this:

{
  \override Beam.positions = #'(2.7 . 2.7)
  g128[ g]
}

What do the experts think?

This has been discussed at some length on the user list.
