I think it is useful to prettify the initial commands like \clef \key, etc., but
yes, the notes themselves are an entirely different
matter.

BTW, I prefer to \include the notes themselves because I can build
each part from a matrix with the parts in lines or columns and
instantly shift the score between them. That way the notes in the \notes
blocks come from temporary files. It's not completely done, but
it's tested and it works. The line you are on in your editor is the
measure number. My little power tool is really irrelevant to lilypond
development because nothing has to change, so I didn't post it
here, but in user. I finished it Monday, but now I've gotten a little more
ambitious, isn't that always the way?

Of course it is only suitable for large projects, but the small ones
have to be pretty too, and especially, your .ly file still has to make
sense to you.

In a case where the notes are \included, the notes blocks should
probably be in the \score block. Otherwise, probably not. That's a matter of
individual style and purpose anyway, isn't it?

It didn't occur to me until later that I wanted to use barchecks with
spaces as the field separator, and that either a line or column from
a score could make a valid part. This again has nothing to do with
lilypond development or what you do with notes, because I necessarily strip out
all that and put it back when flipping the matrix.
