An imho better way of solving the problem would be to use overlapping beams:


 |\
 | \
 |  \
 | | \
 |    \
 | |   \
  \     \
   \    |
   |    |
   | \  |
   |    |
   |   \|
   |    |
    \   |
     \  |
      \ |
       \|


This approach is also more safe against rounding errors leading to thin white
lines within the object.
