Another aspect when it comes to mensural notation is that
it is fairly common to change to shorter note values when
doing modern editions of the old manuscripts. See for example
some of the pieces in the editions of the music by Thomas
Ravenscroft at http://www.pbm.com/~lindahl/ravenscroft/modern/
You may want to print both a scholarly edition and a performance
edition from the same Lilypond definition of the music. Today
it can probably be done using some Scheme hacking, maybe that's
good enough.
